Caitie is sharing helpful tips for learning in the classroom or at home using the song I’m Thankful from Super Simple Songs! She sings the song and shows us gestures for the key vocabulary words, too! This a great song to teach little ones about gratitude and to practice the vocabulary, “thank you”.

Try these ideas in the classroom or at home!

This song is a great introduction to teaching the meaning of gratitude. Ask your students what they feel thankful for, and see what they come up with.

You can also talk about the different ways we can show our gratitude, not only to the people around us but also to our environment. In the song, we sing about being thankful for the bird and the trees, so have a conversation with your students about how we can show gratitude for those things in nature, too.

Once you’ve discussed the different things you are thankful you can make a thankful pie craft as a class. This is a great activity for the week of Thanksgiving when those who celebrate consider the things they’re grateful for and there’s usually pie involved too. Come up with a few things you are grateful for as a class and put them into your pie craft. Then you can move the pie each day to reveal another thing your class is thankful for and you can have a further discussion on the topic.

You can also have each of your students make a thankful collage. Have them cut out pictures of things they’re thankful for from magazines or photos and glue them to a piece of paper to make a special artwork of gratitude. They can present their artwork to the class and explain the different things they chose to include.

Another fun activity is Thanksgiving Bingo! You can use our printable or make your own game cards by adding in your own images into each box. You can either play as a class or give each student a game card so they can play on their own. The goal is to spot the things in real life, kind of like a scavenger hunt, and to mark it off once it’s been found. You can work towards four in a row, or cover the whole game board. This is a nice activity to encourage little ones to be on the lookout for the things they should feel grateful for and to recognize those things when they see them.

For older students who can write, encourage them to write a letter to someone they want to say thank you to. It can be for someone they feel grateful for, or for a specific thing that a person did for them, just be sure they include those important words, thank you.

The kids are back to school, the leaves are changing colours and the mornings are getting chilly – that means that pumpkin spice is in the air! There’s no better way to welcome the fall weather than to bake treats that are spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg and make your house smell like a warm hug.

These pumpkin doughnuts will do just that – gently spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, and flavoured with real pureed pumpkin, it’s the perfect on the go snack for those crisp mornings. They’re topped with a light glaze and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar for an extra treat, which also makes them perfect for a non-traditional Thanksgiving dessert. The best part about these doughnuts is that they’re baked – no mess from frying! All you need to do is pick up a doughnut pan, which are generally available at any kitchen supply store, and you can be making these cakey, soft, delicious treats anytime!

Mmmm, pie! Did we trick your eye? This is not a recipe blog post, it’s a craft! One thing that makes us super thankful about Thanksgiving dinner is the pie, of course. So let’s craft some Thankful Pie filled with all of the things we are thankful for throughout the year. This is the perfect craft-ivity for the family to collaborate on. Now let’s get baking. (Actually, crafting.)

To begin, paint one paper plate silver or leave it white.

Paint the crust on the second paper plate using a light beige color.

To make the pie filling, we used our sponge brush to stipple two paint colors together for a realistic look. Load up the brush with both colors and stamp, stamp, stamp!
Pumpkin: orange and brown paint

Blueberry: blue and dark blue

Apple: light beige, brown, and red

Mixed Berry Pie: red and purple

As a finishing touch for the pie crust, stamp the edge of the pie plate with a fork dipped in dark brown paint.

Use gloss Mod Podge to add shine to the filing and parts of the crust edge.
Time for some toppings! Add a dollop of whipped cream (a cotton ball or pom poms as berries.) Glue them in place with your glue stick.

Use scissors to cut one slice of pie. This triangle will reveal the words on your gratitude wheel! Cool, right?

Get your pencil ready to trace. Use your piece of pie as a stencil and trace it all around your silver pie plate. Use a permanent marker to write what you’re thankful for in each pie slice. Each family member can contribute something, if you like.
Tips: You can use our template of course, and don’t be shy to get really specific with yours. For instance, you could write the names of your family members, teachers, caregivers, neighbours, favorite places, seasons, and activities. There is so much to be thankful for.

Use the Thankful Pie at the Thanksgiving table. Let everyone take a turn spinning the slice and discovering what everyone is thankful for this year.

Who wants apple pie? Mmmm! You can use some cream or beige construction paper and fun shaped scissors.

Cut 8 strips of cream colored construction paper using fun shaped scissors.

Weave the strips alternating top to bottom. Using a glue stick, add glue in between the top layer of the lattice’s outside edge. Flip over and repeat.

Add glue around the plate’s edge, placing the lattice on top. Trim the outside edge to tidy it up. Add some different shades of paint to create dimension. Glaze with Mod Podge for some shine.
For more Thanksgiving fun, check out Peekaboo, Thank You and the Love And Gratitude Songs Compilation from Treetop Family.

Enter The Thankfulness Jar.

The summer is coming to a close. Rolls of blustery wind taking with it yellow and brown leaves and the last of the warmth of the sun. Soon everyone will be wrapped up in knitwear and proclaiming the ‘hygge’ season. If you live on the Western side of a map then you are likely to celebrate Thanksgiving in one way or another. Though America and Canada both celebrate different things during this holiday, one thing is constant; gratitude and thanks. There is thankfulness of those came before us, thankfulness of what the harvest brings in and for families and friends. It is something we lack across the pond that if we are being honest, may feel actually just a little envious not having an equivalent day.

The Oxford Dictionary states that being ‘thankful’, is being ‘pleased and relieved’. It is a feeling. A warm and pleasing state of mind. Feeling gratitude is an action, like saying, ‘thank you’. It is something we have been conditioned into saying from the moment we learn to talk. It is an automatic response. It is one of the phrases that parents most repeat to their children and as adults, we respond with the two words regularly without even giving them much thought. It’s polite to do after all. But how often do we pause and really think about what we are thankful for? The response of saying those two words is the person actively showing gratitude. It turns out gratitude is actually good for your health and scientists have begun to prove why. On 23 November 2014, an article on forbes.com by Amy Morin, writes about, ‘7 Scientifically Proven Benefits Of Gratitude That Will Motivate You To Give Thanks Year-Round’.

The 7 benefits are the following:

A fun activity to do with your children around or on Thanksgiving is creating a Thankfulness Jar. The idea is simple and can be adapted very easily to suit your own family. You can start it a week before or on the day. On a slip of paper, you write what you are thankful for. If you are doing it for only a short space of time, why not write a slip every day and pop it in the jar. If you are doing a jar for a longer period of time, why not write out a slip at the end of the week. Perhaps make it a family event, where you all take a moment together and sit quietly to write on separate pieces of paper. When the time comes at the end of your Thankfulness Jar stint, open the jar up and pour them all out and read them. See which ones are your favourite or which ones have been said more than once. As a family talk about why being thankful for the life you have, even if it is the small things in your day is so important for you as a person, but also for the people around you.

If you are really up for a challenge, why not start one this Thanksgiving and do it for a whole year? Every couple of weeks write a note out. Then in a years time, when you are sat altogether around the table, pour them all out. Reminisce, laugh, cry and be happy together, because let’s be honest, for some many of us if we have a roof over our heads, a warm bed to sleep in, running water and food in our bellies, we are already more better off then millions of other people in the world.

When you think things are bad,
when you feel sour and blue,
when you start to get mad…
you should do what I do!

Just tell yourself, Duckie,
you’re really quite lucky!

Some people are much more,
oh, ever so much more…
oh, muchly much- much more
unlucky than you!

– Dr. Seuss, Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are? (1973)

Instructions:

Decide how long a time period you will be doing your Thankfulness Jar for and how often you will be putting slips of paper into the jar for. Either print out this easy printable to use or create your own slips of paper to use.

If you want to decorate your jar with your children then do that now. Once complete, place your jar somewhere visible.

At the time decided in your week, come together as a family to individually write on the slips of paper and then post them into the jar. If you have younger children, talk about what they have done this week to remind them, the little things as well as the big. It might be easier to do one every day with them and then at the end of the week pick their favourite one.
