It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Captain Monsterica and The Purple Protector! With these straw rockets you can make your own Captain Monsterica and The Purple Protector fly through the sky. These straw rockets are lots of fun to play with and are also a wonderful learning tool to learn the name of the planets. Watch Captain Monsterica and The Purple Protector soar through space and save the day in The Balloon Rescue to learn about the planets, then practice planet name recognition with your own straw rockets! Read on for all the details to make your own!

Things you’ll need 

• Captain Monsterica and The Purple Protector Straw Rockets Template – printed
• Three straws, different sizes: one large and two small
• Scissors 
• Clear Tape

Steps: 

First, cut out all of the shapes from your printed template: Captain Monsterica, The Purple Protector, stars, red balloon and all the planets.  

To make your straw rockets, cut 2″ pieces from both of your large straws, so you have two 2″ pieces.

Then, block one end of the 2″ pieces by covering the opening with a piece of tape. Do this on both straw pieces.

Using tape, attach a 2″ straw piece to the back of each superhero. Now insert a small straw into the large straw piece attached to the superhero to complete your straw rocket.

Aim your rocket, blow into the small straw, and watch them fly!

Turn It Into A Game

Stick your planet cutouts, the balloon and star to a wall. See if your Captain Monsterica and Purple Protector can fly to each of the planets looking for the red balloon. 

To practice planet name recognition, call out a planet’s name, then have your little one fly their super hero to the correct planet. If you are playing with two people, see who can get to the correct planet first – Captain Monsterica, or The Purple Protector!

Let’s blast into the new year and zoom across the sky in our DIY jet packs! This project is fun for space adventurers of any age to make with their family and friends. Although you won’t be able to fly, you will be able to use your imagination and pretend. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1… Let’s get crafty, space travellers!

Things you’ll need

• Resource sheet 
• Two pop bottles
• Sticks or dowels
• Silver spray paint
• Marker
• Ruler
• Felt
• Cardboard
• Glue gun
• Glue stick
• Ribbon
• Stickers
• Scissors
• 1” Tie down straps
• Aluminium foil

Steps

Clean and rinse two plastic bottles. Place them on sticks or dowels. Spray paint the bottles with metallic silver spray paint made for plastic. Allow them to dry according to the spray paint instructions. 

To make the base plate for the jets, place the bottles side by side on top of a piece of cardboard. Draw a line to mark out the sizing. 

Make sure the bottle will have contact at the top and bottom. 

Trace to make a second piece for the back plate. Cut them out. 

Cover the back plate and base plate with foil! First, cover the cardboard with a glue stick. Glue down a sheet of foil and fold down the edges, glueing them in place as well. 

We use 1” tie down straps, but you can also use a wide ribbon. Size the shoulder strapping to your child. Make sure it’s loose enough for their arms to slide in and out. Glue the straps in place and add a waist strap by glueing it to the bottom edge of the board. You should have three straps. 

Glue the second piece of cardboard on top. 

Glue it down with the foil side facing up. Great job! 

Add glue to the top and bottom of the board and hold and press the bottles down. 

Add extra glue in between both bottles for more security. 

Next, trace some flames onto your felt squares. Using a combination of red, orange, and yellow felt will make some very hot flames! 

Layer them on top of one another. 

Add glue to the underside of the red felt and glue it inside the bottle top. 

Now we can decorate! Cut out the space decal image from the free printable resource sheet. Use a glue stick to stick it down to the centre of the back plate. 

Add extra decorative elements like stickers, glitter, ribbon, and buttons.

Three, two, one…blast off! This flying rocket ship craft is simple to make, and fun to play with! There are lots of great learning opportunities for little ones when making this craft – you can ask them what colors they want to make their rocket ship to practice color vocabulary, point out the different shape cut outs that are used on the rocket ship, and practice numbers with a big countdown! Plus it looks really great! Let’s get ready for lift off!

Things you’ll need

• craft paint
• cardboard tube
• paint brush
• glue stick
• tissue paper
• two sheets construction paper (any color!)
• bowl about 6” wide (for tracing a perfect circle)
• pencil
• tape
• straw (we used a paper straw)
• scissors

Steps

1. Paint your cardboard tube the color you would like for your flying rocket ship and then set it aside to dry. This part of a rocket ship is called the body tube!

2. The bottom part of the rocket is called the fins! To make the fins, trace half of the bowl to make a half circle on a piece on construction paper. Then move the bowl down the page, and trace half of a circle again to make a crescent shape. You’ll need two of these shapes. Then cut them out!

Take both pieces and fold them in half to find the centre. Unfold, and cut a line halfway up the folded centre line on one crescent, and make a cut half way down on the other.

Carefully bring the two crescent shapes together by inserting one into the other using the cuts you made.

Using scissors, cut four 3” slits into one end of the paper tube, evenly spaced out. Then carefully slide the crescent shapes into the slits on the paper tube. Now you have your fins!

3. The top part of the rocket ship is called the nose cone! To make the nose cone, trace a circle onto a piece of construction paper and cut it out.

Then, cut away a 1⁄4 pie piece off of the circle.

Roll the paper up to make a cone, then tape and glue together.

Add glue to the top of the cardboard tube’s rim so you cansecure the cone into place. Add extra tape underneath to make it extra secure!

4. Now let’s add some flames to our flying rocket! Cut long triangle shapes from tissue paper. We used red, yellow and orange tissue paper to best show the flames. You can cut all the triangles you need at the same time by stacking the tissue paper together.

Cut out a strip of construction paper, and glue the triangles to the strip. Make sure you glue the bottom of the triangle to the strip of paper. Add glue to the bottom of the rocket ship and glue the strip along the outer edge.

5. For the finishing touches, cut out some circles to make some windows! We traced a bottle cap and found that to be the perfect size for a rocket ship window. You can also use decorative tape, strips of paper, buttons or stickers… anything you like to decorate your rocket ship and make it your own!

To make your rocket fly you can add a straw as a handle. Carefully pierce a hole into your cardboard tube with a pencil and glue a straw into place using hot glue.

Now your rocket ship is ready for take off! Three, two, one….
