The day of love is almost here and what a better way to celebrate than with some homemade sweets! These gummies are a great alternative to the commercially made versions as they contain real fruit juice and a little extra love.

You’ll need:

• 2¼ cups diced strawberries
• ¼ cup lemon juice
• ½ cup orange juice
• 3 tbsp sugar (more to taste)
• 4 tsp agar agar powder (or 6 tbsp of unflavored gelatine)
• cookie cutters or molds

Here’s the instructions:

1. Mix orange juice, lemon juice, and strawberries in a pot.
2. Let the mixture simmer on medium until fruit is extra soft.
3. Remove mixture from stove and add to a blender or food processor.
4. Blend until smooth.
5. Pass through strainer and back into pot to remove seeds from strawberries.
6. Meanwhile mix agar in warm water until it blooms. Start with 3 tablespoons of warm water and stir. Add a tiny bit more until it turns into a soft paste. *Skip this step if you’re using gelatine.
7. Turn pot to medium heat. Then add sugar. Once it’s at a gentle boil, add bloomed agar and mix with a rubber spatula to even out the bubbles and make sure the agar has fully dissolved.
*If using gelatine, stir in gelatine into the pot one tablespoon at a time, until it is completely dissolved.
8. Turn heat to low and continue mixing with spatula—it will start to thicken.

9. Pour mixture into a pan, tin or mold, then place in refrigerator to firm.
*Place molds/pan into fridge and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
10. Once cooled, cut out shapes with cookie cutter or take out of the mold.
11. Enjoy with your loved ones!

Note: Rinse your pots, strainer and blender right away, it gets harder to remove after the gelatine hardens.

Skidamarink a dink a dink, we love you! This Valentine’s Day project is beautiful AND preschool-friendly. Win-win! Kids will love revealing their secret patterns when they paint over the white crayons. Once the hearts are complete, deliver them to loved ones as valentines, decorate the classroom, or make a heart mobile with some string. If you’re feeling lovey-dovey, let’s get started:

Things you’ll need

• Construction paper
• White cardstock
• Scissors
• Glue
• White crayons
• Watercolor paints
• Paintbrush
• Cup of water

Steps

Section your sheet of white cardstock into smaller rectangles and cut them out. Now it’s time to try a wax resist technique! Use white or light colored crayons to make patterns, phrases, or draw hearts. For a great result, draw over the pattern several times so your painting has some nice contrast. TIP: little ones might find it easier to use a light shade of crayon so they can see the pattern they’re making while drawing.

It’s time to paint! Set up the watercolor paints and a cup of water. Paint over the crayon drawing and watch the magic of wax resist.

While your paintings are drying, fold a piece of construction paper in half. Cut half a heart shape from the folded edge. Cut out a smaller half-heart from the inside of your original half-heart shape. Unfold to reveal a heart shaped frame!

Cut out a few hearts. You can make various sizes if you’re feeling creative.

Fit and pair them with your watercolor paintings.

Use your glue stick to glue down the frames onto the paintings. Trim any edges that poke out. Beautiful!

Glue two or three together for an extra special valentine or piece of decor.

Printmaking is a great way to explore different objects and materials, and it gives us a new way to examine the world around us as we search for interesting shapes and patterns. Some of the most beautiful shapes and patterns can be found right under our noses, in objects that are already very familiar to us. In this printmaking project we’re going to use cut vegetables to create a quirky bouquet for Valentine’s Day (or for any time!). There’s plenty of room for experimentation; any vegetable or fruit can potentially become a printing material. For your own unique cards, gather a variety of different vegetables and see how many different shapes you can create with them.

Materials:

• White cardstock, folded in half; 8.5×11” works well for this project.
• Craft paint: you’ll need red for the flowers and green (or yellow and blue mixed together!) for the leaves.
• Paintbrush
• Thin-tipped black marker
• A variety of vegetables, cut in half; we’ll be using the cut ends to print our flowers. Try out different vegetables and different ways of cutting them! An onion or a beet can print an entirely different pattern when cut lengthwise or widthwise. Celery is especially great for printing flowers; just bundle a head of celery tightly with elastic bands and chop the end off for a beautiful rose-shaped printing surface.
• Leaves: any leaves will work for this! If you want to stick with the vegetable theme, there are many leafy green vegetables; we used small kale leaves for our bouquets.

Step 1. Brush red paint over the cut ends of the vegetables, then press firmly onto the cardstock. You can repaint and reprint vegetables many times to make lots of valentines at once. Leave the paint to dry thoroughly.

Step 2. Use the black marker to draw in the stems and ribbon on your bouquet.

Step 3. Brush green paint onto the leaves and press down to print. An easy way to do this without smudging the paint is to lay down a leaf with the painted side down, lay a sheet of paper or card over it, and then run your hands firmly over the surface of the paper to press down the leaf.

You’re done! Now you can write a Valentine’s Day message in your card and deliver it to someone you love!
