We’ve got a great craft activity for all the little artists out there! This abstract art activity is a free form craft where anything goes! Abstract art is a modern form of art that doesn’t look exactly like other things around us. It might make you think, or laugh, or feel something new. It might look like something to you, and something completely different to someone else. Or it might not look anything at all! Abstract art can be anything you can imagine!

In this abstract art activity, we give suggestions for different techniques to try in your abstract art piece. Many of these techniques have been used in some our favorite Super Simple crafts – you might recognize a few! Each one makes a different kind of shape, pattern and texture, and you can use any colors you like.

Try showing your little one a few of these different techniques, and see which ones they like. Some of these techniques are perfect for the youngest of artists, and some are great for artists who have developed their fine motor skills a bit more. Give it a try and see what your little artist comes up with!

Then fill each section with a different technique from the list above!

Colors are fun to teach and can be very fun to learn. Children begin to differentiate colors, shapes, textures and sizes at 18 months, but a good time to start teaching colors is at 2.5 or 3 years old. The best way to teach colors is through playful experience and repetition.

Why is it important to learn about colors? Colors help us sort and classify objects and give us the ability to describe the world we see around us.

As a caregiver, you can work colors into your sentences when speaking with children: “Would you like to wear your yellow hat or your purple hat today?” By adding these descriptions to your everyday conversations you build in some helpful reviewing for little ones.

Another excellent tip for helping kids learn color vocabulary is teaching them how to use the word in a sentence by repeating it both ways. “This is a red apple, this apple is red.”

Getting creative with activities and opportunities for children to use colors is fun for everyone and beneficial for little ones. Our Color Hunt is a great activity you can easily do at home to learn and review colors in a playful way. We hope you try it out and feel free to check out the links below for more color themed content from Super Simple!

Things you’ll need:

Six sheets of colorful construction paper. We chose red, yellow, blue, green, pink, and orange.

Items from around the house, classroom or play area.

Encourage the children to search and choose items that match each of the colors and then have them place the items on top of the corresponding sheet of construction paper. More ideas: You can make it a time challenge by setting a timer and counting up the totals for each color, or assign one color per student, or let it be a work-in-progress activity that children can come back to later in the day or week. Feel free to ask older children to write a list of the items in each color category for further vocabulary and spelling review, too.

We hope you enjoy the Color Hunt and feel free to tag us in your photos and stories so we can see all of the colorful things you learned!
