We all know that learning for little ones is rooted in play, and sensory play is one of our favorite ways to learn! Sensory play promotes creativity, curiosity, exploration, and problem-solving. There are so many ways you can use sensory play and so many different kinds of sensory material. One of our favorite ways to play is with a discovery bin – you might have seen Caitie playing with the discovery bin in Caitie’s Classroom! We fill the bin with sensory material – like sand, water beads, or rainbow pasta – and explore to find the items hidden in the bin. It’s so fun and full of educational moments! 

We’ll walk you through the steps on how you can make your own rainbow pasta for your discovery bins and sensory play! It’s not as tricky as it may seem, and you’ll have beautiful sensory material you can use again and again!

Things You’ll Need

• Dry pasta
• Resealable plastic bags 
• White vinegar 
• Parchment paper 
• Food coloring 
• Measuring cups
• Disposable cup

Steps 

Measure about two cups of your dried pasta, and add it to a resealable plastic bag.  Add 1/8 cup of white vinegar to a disposable cup and add 20-30 drops of food coloring. Stir it together and then give it a test!

Dip a piece of pasta into the cup to test the color saturation. You might decide you’d like a darker shade of that color. Keep adding drops of food coloring until you get the color you like!

Add the food coloring and vinegar mixture to the resealable bag with the pasta. Seal the bag and mix well by shaking the bag until all of the pasta is covered in the color. 

Once it’s all mixed, place the pasta onto parchment paper so it can dry.

Once 30 minutes have passed, use a spoon to break up and mix the pasta. This helps it from sticking together. Then continue to let it dry overnight – no more stirring needed!

Here are some fun ways to use your discovery bin with rainbow pasta! Place your rainbow pasta into a bin. Then put some objects into bin and mix them up so they are hidden among the sensory material. 

Try putting a few plastic numbers into the bin and see what numbers your little one can find. Bonus point if they can put them in order after finding them all! 

Try placing plastic letters in the bin too! Ask your child to find a specific letter and see if they can search through the bin and select it from the sensory material. If you put in all the letters of the alphabet, see if they can find them all in order! Try putting in the letters of your child’s name, and see if they can find those letters one by one to spell their name.

The discovery bin is a great activity to practice and build vocabulary. Have your child identify each item they find in the bin. You can put in some different toy animals and see if they can name each one they find!

We love to explore butterflies using the rainbow pasta in the bowtie shape. The pasta shape looks like a butterfly so it’s very fun to hide toy butterflies among them. See how many your child can find. Can they count them all? What color are the butterfly’s wings? 

You can also just place a bunch of your child’s favorite little toys into the bin and let them see what they can discover! There are so many fun things you can do with one simple discovery bin. 

You can use the sensory material outside of a discovery bin too! Try making different shapes by moving the rainbow pasta into different forms, like a rainbow, or a circle!

If you make different colors of pasta, you can use them to create pictures! Encourage your little one to make a scene like they would using crayons on paper, but use the rainbow pasta instead!

Try mixing up your rainbow pasta and having your little one sort all the pasta pieces into different color groups! 

You can make other things too, depending on the kind of pasta shape you use! Try making lines or practice patterns! 

You could even use a piece of string through pasta with holes to create a fun necklace!

We love colors! And we love sensory play! This homemade no-mess sensory activity is colorful and full of learning opportunities. Little ones will love squishing the colors, and grown ups might like to give it a try, too!

Things you’ll need

• large and heavy duty resealable zipper storage bag
• clear packing tape
• 8.5 x 11 card stock/thick paper
• stickers (optional)
• small bowls or cups
• small baggies
• 1 cup of flour
• 2 cups of water
• tablespoon of salt
• food coloring
• spoon

This recipe will make enough for two colorful sensory bags!

STEPS

Mix flour, water and salt into a pot. Heat on medium heat setting. Mix for a few minutes until all of the mixture starts to thicken into a smooth paste. Remove from heat.

Let the mix cool, then divide the mixture equally into small bowls or cups based on the number of colors you would like to make. We chose the colors red, yellow, green and blue to go along with one of our favorite Super Simple Songs! But you can use any colors you like! Mix 10 -15 drops of food coloring into each bowl until you’ve reached the desired color. Spoon the colors into the small baggies.

If using stickers, place them around the cardstock. These will be fun to uncover and discover when your little one is playing with the colors in a bag. Cover the top side of your cardstock with packing tape. This will help the colors move over the paper and not be absorbed into the paper. Place the card stock into a corner of the large resealable bag.

Cut one corner of the small bags with each color. Pipe the colored mixture into the bottom edge of the card stock sheet in the bag, squeezing the colors out beside each other. Putting them in the little baggies helps keep the rest of the bigger bag clean.

Fold and tape the extra edges of the resealable bag to the back of the card stock. Reinforce edges by sealing with packing tape.

Now you are ready to play! Have your little one move the colors across the paper to cover the whole thing. Once the page is covered, your little one might enjoy just pressing and feeling the texture of the colors in the bag. They will also love using their fingers to move the color mixture find the stickers hiding underneath. What did you find? If you use stickers with different shapes and colors, this is a great time to review that vocabulary, but you can also use the sensory activity to review other things. Try using your finger to write a letter into the colors in the bag. Or write a word or number. With older children, you can play a game of Guess The Picture, and draw different things into the colors in a bag. We’d love to hear your ideas, too! Dinosaurs and play dough. The perfect combination for a whole lot of play! Sometimes getting the play dough out with your normal tools is enough to keep your children occupied… and sometimes it’s not! Children without a doubt require some sort of sensory play on a week to week basis. It allows them to switch off from the world around them and concentrate on what is right in front of them. How things feel, look and smell. By adding a few simple items from your house and nature, you can easily make a themed sensory activity that will keep them occupied and fill that ‘need’ for the week.

This week is all about dinosaurs! So come and join us to create your own dinosaur inspired invitation to play. It centres around dinosaur toys and play dough, sprinkled with sensory items that can be collected from your kitchen, garden, woods or parks. If you want to inspire your children further, why not scatter a book about dinosaurs nearby or watch a dinosaur related film afterwards to keep the theme running through the day. Either way, I think it’s going to be a roarsome day of fun!

Creating your Dinosaur Themed Sensory Tray

What you will need:

• Small plastic toy dinosaurs
• Play dough – shop bought or homemade
• Shells
• Grass/weeds
• Sticks
• Soil/sand
• Twigs
• Mini Trees – toys or broccoli
• Sorting tray/normal tray/ baking tray/ different bowls

Instructions:

1. 1. First of all one must have decided what they will be putting all the items on/in. We used a sorting tray, with lots of different sections. It is however, not necessary to have one. Any normal tray or small bowls are perfectly fine. Your children won’t be looking at the tray when they see what is put in front of them!
   2. If you have decided to make some homemade play dough then do so now. You can find the ingredients and instructions below. If you are using shop bought ones then take it out of the pot, roll it into a ball and place it centrally on your tray.
   3. Place your toy dinosaurs in a huddle or a bowl.
   4. Now you will need to decide what other items you are going to put with your themed play. This part is entirely up to you. Ideally you should gather together items that all feel different to touch. For example, something that can slip through their fingers. You could use rice, sand, soil or grains for this. Next something coarse and rough, we used shells. You could use something like rough rocks or instead glass pebbles for something smooth. Items from nature and the garden are fantastic editions, such as grass and twigs. Lastly we added toy trees. Why not add some fresh broccoli for little trees?

1. Once you have placed all these items in either their own piles or in separate bowls it is ready to be played with.
2. When you show your children the tray, don’t give them any rules. If you are worried about mess, do it outside, in the kitchen or with a large tablecloth on the floor. The fussing about mess will interrupt their play and could very likely shorten the time they want to play with it.
3. When they have been playing with it for a while, why not consider adding normal play dough tools? This will extend the play longer as something new has been added and new options of play have opened.

What You Will Need To Make Your Own Play Dough

Note: This makes two batches enough for two children. If you want to make a smaller batch, half all the ingredients.

• 2 cup plain flour
• 1 cup warm water
• 1/2 cup salt
• 2 Tbsp Cream of Tartar
• Half a teaspoon gel food colouring (any you fancy, we used green)

Instructions for play dough:

1. In a big bowl pour your flour, salt and cream of tartar and combine.
2. Dissolve your food colouring into your cup of warm water. This is important if you want to get an evenly spread and smooth colour throughout your play dough.
3. Slowly pour your coloured warm water into the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix slowly. It should come together quite quickly.
4. Once it has all stuck to itself and combined into one big ball, take it in your hands and knead it onto a surface until it is all combined. It should not be sticky. If it is, add a touch more flour to absorb the extra moistness.
5. It is now ready to be used!

Making your own play dough is entirely optional. We have found however that unlike shop bought stuff, we can make triple the amount of play dough with ingredients just from our kitchen cupboards. It is also more ply-able and you can choose whatever colour you want without having to go hunting for it!

Bees can see colours that people can’t, a type of light called ultraviolet. Many flowers have patterns on them that bees can see but we can’t.

Bats can hear sounds that are too high for people to hear; they find their way around in the dark by making these high-pitched sounds and listening to the echoes. Elephants can hear sounds that are too low for people to hear; they use these sounds to communicate over long distances.

If you have a dog, you’ve probably noticed that it goes around sniffing things. Dogs have an amazing sense of smell that’s much better than ours. A dog could smell a teaspoon of sugar in a million gallons of water.

Some animals have senses that we don’t even have! Some snakes have an organ on their face that lets them detect warm objects from far away. Sharks have organs for detecting the electric fields produced by living things.

People mostly rely on our sense of sight to get around, but our sense of touch is pretty good too. Here’s an activity to test your sense of touch.

You need:

• A blindfold
• A helper
• Several objects from around your house

1. Put the blindfold on.
2. Ask your helper to choose several objects from around your house. These could include some of your toys. Don’t choose anything breakable or sharp!
3. Have your helper hand you the objects one by one. Feel their shapes, their textures, and whether they’re hard or soft. Try to figure out what they are!

Oh Arrrr me hearties! Today we have a fantastically sensory based treasure chest for your little pirates. Using items you have lying around the house, in your dress up boxes or toy cupboards, anything that could be used to fill up your very own personalized chest of loot for your children! Simply gather them together with your water beads and you have yourself an easy sensory activity. We guarantee you won’t be able to stop yourselves from sticking your own arms into the looted treasure chest.

So let’s hop to it!

What you will need:

• A box / ice chest / large plastic bin
• Water beads
• Water
• Treasure! Such as: play coins, costume jewellery, crowns, gems, telescope, eye patch, hook, bracelets, pirate map, compass
• Camera and printer (optional!)
• Pirate dressing up costumes (optional)

Instructions:

1. The night before you want to do this activity place your water beads in water and allow to expand for 12 hours (overnight). They should double or triple in size depending on which brand and type you buy. Make sure to follow the instructions on your water bead bottle as they may vary. The more space and water you give them the bigger they will grow and the bigger they are the more fun you’ll have playing with them.
2. Once they are full size transfer them to whatever you are using to represent the treasure box. Try and dry the water beads off as much as you can before putting them in your treasure box. Careful, water beads are very bouncy!
3. Lay out all your treasure that you have collected to stand for the loot and take a photo. Print it out or just leave it on a screen for your children to see. If you have printed it out, draw tick boxes next to all the items so that they can tick them off as they find them. If you haven’t printed them, write out the items that need to be found with tick boxes so that they can still tick them once found.
4. Now place all your loot into your treasure chest and mix them all up.
5. If you have pirate dressing up clothes lay them all out by the treasure chest. If you have printed out all the treasure place it by the chest with a pen. If not then you can show your child the image on your camera, or failing that simply just allow them to explore.

By laying everything out, you are creating an invitation to play. We have created a theme, they are getting into a character and can now create a story of how they found a treasure chest and what they will find inside.

SAFETY WARNING:
Never leave your children unattended with water beads. They are a choking hazard and if ingested will expand in their stomachs. If you have pets be mindful they don’t swallow or eat any also.

TIP: Want to add a bit more fun to this sensory bin if you have slightly older children? Why not blind fold them and see if they can guess what they are finding in the treasure chest.

Alternative to water beads

If you don’t have water beads or don’t want your children playing with them why not try using rice instead? Alongside our large Treasure Chest Sensory Bin we created a smaller treasure chest with ‘pearls’ and shells to be fished out. We filled it with coloured rice, varying sizes of white pom poms and little shells. We then put some scoop pinchers to be used to get them out.

What, Why, How Sensory Play

What is sensory play?
Anything that gets your child to use and stimulate their senses (sight, hearing, small, taste and touch).

Why introduce sensory play to your child?

It is an inexpensive and easy way for your child to develop their sensory needs through imaginations, exploration, creating, developing their language, fine motor skills, social development and much more.

Many will find their very active, never-sit-still child may spend twice as long playing with sensory activities than normal ones. This means it is filling a developmental space that was missing that day. Sensory bottles for example are often referred to as calm down bottles. Being used by children who need the space to readjust and realign their emotions when everything is getting too much. Using glitter in them children will sit entranced watching as it moves. This is similar to how we as adults may feel when we gaze into a fire. That moment of mesmerising stillness, when you are physically still, watching something else that is not. It brings you to the present and quietens the mind.

How do I make a sensory bin?

While sensory bottles encourage visual stillness, sensory bins are made for touching! The sheer variation to them are limitless. As well as touch you can even add smell and taste if you wished too.

The reason these bins have become so popular in recent years is that they are also inexpensive to make. You can use so many different types of items from your kitchen alone – rice, pasta, flour, oats, pulses you name it. Create a theme and then get thinking.

Who doesn’t love a good bubble bath? For little ones, bubbles may be the highlight of bath time, or the reason to get into the bath in the first place! For them, bath time isn’t always about getting clean, but about having fun in the water. And why not? These days, with a great variety of bath toys and bath activity ideas available, bath time can be fun, productive and educational to boot! Win-win-win! So why limit all the fun to when it’s time to get clean? With this colourful foam, you can make a bubble bath sensory experience that is great fun any time. Kids will love to get their hands on the foamy bubbles! Try out some of our suggested activities to add in some practice with colours, too. Fun and educational? That’s another win-win!

• Make a two different colours and see what happens when they get mixed together. What new colour did it make?
• With a few different colours, ask your little one to identify each one. You can also call out a colour, and they can blow some bubbles of that colour into the air – flying foam!
• Gather a few bath friendly items and get them give them a bubble bath in the foam! You can even ask your little one to match the colours of the toys to the right coloured foam, like we did in the Bath Time episode of Caitie’s Classroom!

Have fun!

Materials

• food coloring – liquid or gel
• water
• dish soap
• measuring cup
• hand mixer
• tablespoon
• large bowl

1. Add two tablespoons of dish soap and cup of water to a large bowl.

2. Add a few drops of food coloring into the bowl.

3. Mix with hand mixer on high speed of a couple on minutes.

Oil & Water Sensory Bottles

Materials

• Baby oil or Canola oil
• water
• large glass
• water-based food coloring
• oil-based food coloring for candy
• bottles

Steps

1. Fill bottle up one-third of the way with water and add water-based food coloring until you reach your desired color. Add lid and shake
2. If you chose to color the oil, pour the oil into a glass and slowly mix in the oil-based coloring. Mix a bit at a time until you reach your desired colour. Add oil to the bottle.  Tightly secure lid.   

Discovery Sink or Float Bottles

Materials

• Water
• Sequins
• buttons
• sparkles
• fun foam shapes
• food coloring

Steps

1. Add water to bottles with room to fill.
2. Add any items you like. See list for inspiration, or choose your own!
3. Add a couple of drops of food colouring if desired.

Milk and juice are liquids: they flow, and they don’t hold their shape. Wood and rocks are solids: they hold their shape, and they don’t flow.

But slime is different. When you pour it, it flows like a liquid. But when you squeeze it or slap it, it feels like a solid.

All the stuff in the universe – even you! – is made of tiny pieces called molecules, which are far too small to see. The molecules that make up glue are shaped like long chains. These long chains can slide around each other, so glue can flow – it’s a liquid. But when you add sodium borate, those molecules link the chains up side by side, like the wooden slats that link railroad tracks together. Now the chains can’t slide around each other anymore. The substance is now slime.

Kids love playing with slime, and there are reasons to believe it’s good for their developing brains. Playing with slime, water, or playdough is referred to as tactile play, part of the broader category of sensory play – so called because it engages the senses and helps a child learn how to use them.

You can learn much more about something if you use all your senses. Sensory play encourages cognitive development, helping a child learn concepts like quantity and classification. It provides practice for motor skills and eye-hand coordination. It can help children manage anxiety and feel more grounded. Plus, it’s fun!

Make Your Own Slime

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup Water 
• 1/2 cup Clear School Glue
• 1 to 3 drops Food Coloring (optional)
• 1/4 cup Halloween Glitter
• 1 tablespoon Baking Soda
• 2 – 3 tablespoons Saline Solution that contains both boric acid and sodium borate

Materials

• Mixing Bowl
• Spatula
• Measuring Cup

Steps

1. Mix clear school glue with water in a bowl.
2. Add the food coloring until you’ve reached your desired color. Add the Halloween glitter.  Mix well.
3. Slowly add 1/4  tsp of baking soda at a time and mix well.
4. Add one tablespoon of saline solution at a time and mix vigorously until the mix gets sticky and starts to pull off the bowl.
5. Remove from bowl and knead with hands

Important: Wash your hands after playing with slime, since sodium borate can irritate your eyes. And don’t pour your slime down the drain! It will clog up the pipes.

Welcome to the Edible Construction Sensory Bin! Today we will be exploring what construction people do through the medium of sensory play! I am yet to meet a child that does not love a tractor, digger, dump truck, bulldozer, fire engine, police car or garbage truck or really any vehicle that is big and has a job to do. Today we are focusing in on construction vehicles.

Some construction vehicles you might see on a construction site and that you might consider having in your sensory bin:

• Bulldozer: for pushing away debris
• Front loader: loads up the debris that the bulldozer moved.
• Dump trucks: get loaded up with the debris that the front loader has moved.
• Backhoes: used for shallow digging, for example for pipes.
• Cranes: used for lifting heavy objects around a construction site.

What might people in the construction industry do?

• Make roads
• Build bridges
• Build houses
• Quarry land sites for stone

As well as opening a new avenue of vocabulary and jobs to your children, you may be introducing some to new sensory elements; touch, taste and imaginative play. We encourage you to stay with your children as they play and really use this activity as an interactive time to explore a new topic, to encourage them to get lost in role playing with their construction vehicles and toy people and have fun together.

Talk to them and ask them questions about people in the construction industry.

What sort of things would they do?

What might they build that we use every day?

Do you think this is hard or easy work?

Do you think it might be tough when it is cold out?

Once you have allowed them to engage with you and think about what being a construction person is, move on to sensory questions.

What feels cold?

If we pour this warm water on those ice cubes what do you think will happen?

So warm water melts ice?

Are ice and water the same?

I see you’ve spotted that the ice cubes have treasure in them, how do you think we can get to the treasure?

If we pour water into this flour sand do you think we can make cement?  

The number of questions you ask your child will naturally depend on how old your child is. Make it more basic with younger children. They may need you to show them how to engage with what is in front of them, especially if they have no older siblings to watch and copy. Use simple sentences, like, ‘Oooo, that is cold. Ice is cold isn’t it?’ Do you like the feel of warm water on your hands? Shall we try and melt the ice to get the treasure? See how the tractor is digging? For younger children, it can be a good activity for them to learn new words, so say each word outlaid for them to hear and get them to repeat them back to you.

What you will need:

• Something to use as a sensory bin. We have used a Tuff tray, but a pan or plastic tub is equally fine.
• Construction cars; diggers, tractors, forklifts, constructions cones, lego men, etc
• Digging tools, kitchen scoops, spades rakes and the like.
• Edible foods; oats, cereal, pasta, rice, couscous, flour, coffee beans etc.
• Kitchen roll/ loo roll/marble run pieces etc for a flume
• Ice tray and add-ins: berries, small sweets, coins, etc (optional)
• Yogurt (optional)
• Warm water in a jug (optional)

Instructions:

1. Start 24 hours before start of play. If you would like to create ‘building blocks’ then you will need a couple of ice trays. We put in ours, yogurt, water with colouring and add-ins frozen in water.  Though optional, we would encourage you to add this part into your sensory bin as it adds another element of sensory play with the addition of a temperature difference.
   Safety Warning: If you are using coins in ice cubes, as well as just ice cubes on their own, never leave your child unattended with them as they are a chocking hazard.
2. Once you have decided which foods you are using, create your sensory bin. It is entirely up to you how you set it up. Some put each vehicle in front of a different pile of food or material. Think about what the vehicle may be good for doing when you match it up with the food pile. For example, if you have a pile of flour, perhaps a vehicle that may rake or scoop easily is the right one to pair it with. Or a dumper truck may be paired with a cereal that has larger pieces that look like boulders.
3. If you have any construction toys like barriers, safety cones, lego trees, lego people, add them into the Sensory bin. You will find that your children will soon start to initiate play with them.
4. If you are covering the whole of the floor of your bin in, for example oats, why not clear out a road for the vehicles to race and move around in. This will again, add another element to your children’s play.
5. Try and make your sensory bin on different levels by cutting the inside of a cardboard roll from kitchen paper, loo paper or wrapping paper in half to create a gutter that they can pour cereal/rice/pasta/coffee beans etc down in.
6. Now take the time to engage with your child and have fun with them.

What entertained my almost 2-year-old while exploring was filling and refilling the trucks full of boulder cereal and oats. My 4-year-old was very determined and transfixed in ‘freeing’ the treasure from the ice blocks. She didn’t stop until they were all liberated.
