Spiders can be a little bit spooky for young ones, but these friendly and fun puppet spiders might help kids get used to the idea of them. Talking to children about the importance of spiders in nature, and leaving them to do their important work, will help kids form positive associations with arachnids.
We love this spider puppet craft because it brings spiders to life in a playful, artistic way. Have fun personalizing your puppet by choosing your favorite colors. They make cool teaching aids and are fun to wiggle along to your favorite Super Simple songs.
If our spider friends make you smile, let’s get started!
Things you’ll need
- Foam ball
- Googly eyes
- 4 pipe cleaners
- Paper plate
- Craft paint
- Bamboo skewer
- Glue stick
- Pencil
Steps
With a glue stick, add glue to the pointy end of the bamboo skewer and stick it into the foam ball.
Choose a base color for your spider. Paint the ball and the bamboo skewer and set it aside to dry completely.
While your spider body dries, fold four pipe cleaners in half. These will be the legs, so choose your favorite color!
Once the spider is dry, use your pencil to make two holes on each side of the ball, approximately half an inch apart. Press the folded tips of the pipe cleaners into these holes.
Twist the two centre legs together like twist ties. This will give the legs some extra strength and security.
Glue your googly eyes in place. (The bigger the eyes, the cuter and sillier the spider. Try using more than two eyes and some different sizes!) Cut out a small mouth from construction paper and glue it in place.
Now that your spider puppet is assembled, have fun creating your own cool pattern on its body. Set up some craft paint on a paper plate and use a small paint brush or the tip of a pencil to create shapes and patterns.
Tip: To create vibrant colors and patterns, let the paint dry between layers.
Now you’re ready to make your spider move!
Sing along to The Itsy Bitsy Spider or crawl, crawl, crawl like a spider in The Roundabouts’ song The Roly Poly Roll.
