‘Tis the season to hang some beautiful ornaments on the Christmas tree. We made this paper plate ornament craft as an easy alternative to real Christmas tree decorating. This way, little ones can be part of the festivities while practicing their color and shapes vocabulary. Plus, these ornaments make a perfect decoration for the refrigerator or classroom. So let’s get started, busy elves!
Things you’ll need:
- Paper plate
- Tissue paper
- White glue
- Water
- Glue stick
- Paint brush
- Scissors
- Ribbon
- Hole punch
- Bottle cap
- Pencil
- Marker
Steps
To prepare, you can pre-cut some tissue paper shapes. We loved working with circles for this craft, so we traced two sizes of bottle caps with a pencil and cut out several circles at once by stacking the tissue paper.
Make your glue and water mixture on a paper plate by adding approximately two parts glue and one part water. Mix, mix, mix!
Use your paintbrush to paint the paper plate with a layer of glue mixture. Pick up the tissue paper shapes with the tip of your brush and place them on the plate. Paint a layer of glue overtop. Overlap the next piece of tissue and repeat this process.
Optional: you can add some creative details with a marker once the glue is dry. You could even write your name!
Cut out a square shape with a scalloped edge to make the top of the ornament. Glue this piece to the front of the plate. Use a hole punch to make a hole near the top and thread a piece of ribbon through it for hanging.
Q: Which ornament gets fan mail?
A: The star.
