Mmmm, pie! Did we trick your eye? This is not a recipe blog post, it’s a craft! One thing that makes us super thankful about Thanksgiving dinner is the pie, of course. So let’s craft some Thankful Pie filled with all of the things we are thankful for throughout the year. This is the perfect craft-ivity for the family to collaborate on. Now let’s get baking. (Actually, crafting.)
Things you’ll need
- 2 paper plates
- Craft paint – silver, beige, pie colors
- Paint brush
- Plastic fork
- Round sponge brush
- Cotton balls
- Pom poms
- Black marker
- Pencil
- Glue stick
- Scissors, regular and fun shape
- Construction paper
- Mod Podge
Skip to the Apple Pie part, please.
Steps
To begin, paint one paper plate silver or leave it white.
Paint the crust on the second paper plate using a light beige color.
To make the pie filling, we used our sponge brush to stipple two paint colors together for a realistic look. Load up the brush with both colors and stamp, stamp, stamp!
Pumpkin: orange and brown paint
Blueberry: blue and dark blue
Apple: light beige, brown, and red
Mixed Berry Pie: red and purple
As a finishing touch for the pie crust, stamp the edge of the pie plate with a fork dipped in dark brown paint.
Use gloss Mod Podge to add shine to the filing and parts of the crust edge. This will make the color shine, and the pie will look realistic.
Time for some toppings! Add a dollop of whipped cream (a cotton ball or pom poms as berries.) Glue them in place with your glue stick.
Use scissors to cut one slice of pie. This triangle will reveal the words on your gratitude wheel! Cool, right?
Get your pencil ready to trace. Use your piece of pie as a stencil and trace it all around your silver pie plate. Use a permanent marker to write what you’re thankful for in each pie slice. Each family member can contribute something, if you like.
Tips: You can use our template of course, and don’t be shy to get really specific with yours. For instance, you could write the names of your family members, teachers, caregivers, neighbours, favorite places, seasons, and activities. There is so much to be thankful for.
Use the Thankful Pie at the Thanksgiving table. Let everyone take a turn spinning the slice and discovering what everyone is thankful for this year.
Happy Thanksgiving!
The Apple Pie Part
Who wants apple pie? Mmmm! You can use some cream or beige construction paper and fun shaped scissors.
Cut 8 strips of cream colored construction paper using fun shaped scissors.
Weave the strips alternating top to bottom. Using a glue stick, add glue in between the top layer of the lattice’s outside edge. Flip over and repeat.
Add glue around the plate’s edge, placing the lattice on top. Trim the outside edge to tidy it up. Add some different shades of paint to create dimension. Glaze with Mod Podge for some shine.
