Caitie is sharing tips for using the preschool song “The Months Chant” in the classroom and at home for lots of fun learning with little ones. She has lots of great ideas! And she’ll lead us through the song using gestures – an excellent way to introduce a song to children. “The Months Chant” is a super simple chant that is perfect for practicing the months of the year and their order.
Try these ideas in the classroom or at home!
- This is a great song to teach or review the months of the year. Try singing it at the start of every month to introduce the new month. Have your students clap on the month that has just begun as you sing the chant.
- You can also sing this song by going around the circle and having each student sing one of the months. The person who sings the month that it currently is can jump or do a silly movement.
- Try singing it in different voices, as well! There are lots of ways to keep it fresh and fun.
- Print out flashcards that show the different months and hold them up as you sing. You can also give your students a set of flashcards and have them put them in order, and then play the song to check their work.
- For a group activity, spread the flashcards on the floor and have your students help you put the months in order. Then stand in a line next to January and jump as a group to February, March, and so on, jumping month to month as you chant. Next, mix up the cards so they are out of order again so students have to jump back and forth to get to the next month.
- Try making a calendar as a class. Each student can draw a picture representing each month to have in the calendar. Be sure to talk about what holidays are in each month, what the weather is like and if a new season starts during that time so they can best represent their month in their drawing.
