Try these ideas in the classroom or at home!
- This song explores lots of fun costumes and fun sounds, too. Ask your students what they are going to be for Halloween and encourage them to come up with a sound for it.
- Show flashcards of different Halloween costumes, and ask them what sound these characters might make, then try the sounds together!
- When you sing with a large group, try dividing everyone into six smaller groups, one group for each character in the song. Give each group a different verse of the song to sing and encourage them to pretend to be that character. It’s a fun challenge to sing the right parts when the sounds go faster at the end of each verse. You can even give each group some costume elements to help them really get into character.
- This song uses the helpful phrase “if I were a…”. Once your students are familiar with the song, you can use that phrase to imagine what it would be like to be all sorts of things, and you can use the format during other times of the year, like when you’re exploring careers. You can imagine what it would be like to be a doctor, or a bus driver. Or when you are learning about animals, imagine what it would be like to be a dog or a monkey, and the different sounds they would make!
- Halloween can be a scary time for young children, there are many spooky things around, including costumes and sounds! You can have a conversation with your students about how Halloween is a lot of playing pretend, just like we do in the song. It’s a time of year when people imagine they’re something else but it’s all just for fun.
