That’s a lot of love! This homemade card is a wonderful gift to give to someone you have a lot of love for. When they open the card and stretch out the arms, they will know just how much you care. We’ll show you how to make it, along with a homemade envelope to keep it all together until the big reveal. It makes a great activity for Valentine’s Day, a fun card for Mother’s or Father’s Day, or just an exciting way to tell someone you love them…with a side of giggles!
Things You’ll Need
- Yarn
- Googly eyes
- Construction paper – three sheets in different shades of pink and red
- Glue stick
- Tape
- Scissors
- Marker
- White paper for the envelope – we used regular printer paper
Make The Card
Fold a piece of construction paper in half, then unfold and cut down the line so you have two separate pieces. Save one piece for later. Fold the other piece in half again to make the card. This will make a card that fits perfectly into your homemade envelope – more on that later! If you like, you can round the edges of your card as we did.
Decorate the front of your card with the question, “how much do I love you?” You can also add in other decorations if you like, but the question is the important part!
To make the heart for the inside of your card, cut out a square that fits inside your card from a different shade of construction paper. Fold it in half and draw half a heart shape. Cut out the heart shape from the folded edge, then unfold to reveal your heart! Next, make two more hearts that are slightly smaller the same way. You can cut these hearts out at the same time by layering the paper and cutting them together.
Keep the two smaller hearts folded. Glue one side of one folded heart to the back to the bigger heart, and the other side to the inside of the card. Do the same thing with the second smaller heart on the other side of the big heart.
This will make your big heart pop up when the card is opened!
Now let’s make the big arms that will stretch out! Cut two pieces of yarn that are the same length and glue one to the back of each side of the big heart. You can secure it in place with a piece of tape, too.
Let’s make the heart’s hands! Cut out two hearts for each hand, making one a little bigger than the other. You can layer your construction paper and cut them out together to make the hearts for each hand the same size. Add glue to one side of both hearts and sandwich the yarn between them, making a heart hand!
Finish off your card by gluing the eyes into place and drawing eyebrows, a nose, and a mouth. Then write on the top…I love you this much!
Now, we’ll show you how to make a homemade envelope to put your card into! A card with limbs this big needs a special envelope!
Make The Envelope!
Place your finished card at the bottom of a piece of white printer paper and make a fold at the top of the card. This will be the size of your envelope, so make sure your card fits within the fold!
Remove the card and keep your envelope folded. Fold the flap over the top edge.
Fold in both sides of the envelope, making sure your card still fits in the space in the middle.
Now open the folded sheet of paper. Place it in front of you so the shorter edge is closest to you, and the top flat is furthest away. Draw two rectangles at the bottom on either side on the folded lines, and two diagonal lines (45 degrees) at the top on either side starting from the corner of the folded square to the edges of the paper.
Cut along those lines to cut off the top corners and the bottom rectangles.
Fold the center side tabs in and add glue to the top of the tabs.
Fold the bottom of the envelope up and stick it to the tabs.
Now your homemade envelope is ready for your homemade card!
To seal the envelope, cut out a final heart and use it to glue the top flap of the envelope down.
Write the name of the person you plan to give the card to on the envelope. Now all that is left to do is to make their day when you deliver your special card!
We know they are going to love it. How much will they love it?
