Rainbow Heart Craft

Rainbow Heart Craft

We love rainbows! They are beautiful and colorful natural wonders, and they are perfect for practicing colors with little ones. In this rainbow craft, little ones get the opportunity to practice colors and shapes, as well as some fine motor skills as they stamp the paper. Win-win-win! As you help your little one make the craft, either repeat the names of each color, or ask them to identify each color. When you are done, hang your craft in a place you often pass so you can point out the shape or the colors again for even more repeated exposure to the vocabulary! We used a heart shape for our craft, but you can use a circle, square, oval, triangle – any shapes at all to get in lots of shapes practice!

As you make your craft, may we recommend some colorful songs to play in the background?

Things You Need

Rainbow Heart Craft
  • Bingo daubers – often called dot markers or paint dotters. Alternatively you can use pompoms as stamps in paint!
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Tape
  • Two sheets of blank paper – white is best to practice colors on!

Steps

Rainbow Heart Craft

Fold a sheet of paper in half and with a pencil draw half of a large heart (or any shape you are practicing) from the folded edge. You will be drawing smaller versions of the same shape within this first one, so make it big! Then draw smaller half hearts (or whatever shape you are doing) within the bigger heart leaving at least an inch between each one. Make as many hearts as you have colors. We used six colors, so we drew six hearts! This craft is easiest if your paper is secure in one spot! To do that, gently add tape to the corners of your other sheet of paper so it sticks down on your table.

Cut out along the lines of your largest heart and open the fold. Making little loops with your tape, lightly stick your heart onto the middle of your other sheet of paper.

Pick your first color! Dot or stamp around the edges of the heart and leave it to dry.

Gently remove the heart from piece of paper and fold back in half. Cut along the lines of the next biggest heart and open the fold so you now have a heart that is slightly smaller. Using your tape loops, lightly stick this new slightly smaller heard in the middle of the big heart.

Pick your next color and stamp or dot along the edges of the new heart!

Repeat the process, continuing to the next size down until you have the smallest heart at the center.
