How To Teach First We Wash Our Hands

Caitie is sharing helpful tips for learning in the classroom or at home using the song First We Wash Our Hands from Super Simple Songs! She sings the song and shows us gestures for the key vocabulary words, too! This a great song to encourage little ones to wash their hands before they eat, and to encourage pretend play!

Try these ideas in the classroom or at home!

  • This is a great song for classroom management. Play it or sing it whenever you need your students to wash their hands or as a transition when it’s time to eat.
  • You can also play the song and act it out for a role-play activity. Encourage your students to pretend they are washing their hands and to go through all the movements, from turning on the water, getting the soap, scrubbing, rinsing, and drying. Don’t forget to turn off the tap, too!
  • Try roleplaying with a stuffed animal and have your students make them wash their hands.
  • This song is also a fun introduction to why it is important to wash our hands. Give an explanation, or ask your students if they know why we should wash our hands before we eat. You can have this conversation throughout the year whenever your students need a reminder, but it might come in extra handy during the flu season to help keep everyone healthy.
  • We also talk about the different meals we eat throughout the day: breakfast, lunch, snacktime, and dinner. See if your students can put those meals in order from the beginning of the day to the end for a quick mealtime vocabulary activity during a unit about food.
