How To Teach I Like You

Caitie is sharing tips for using the preschool song “I Like You” in the classroom and at home for lots of fun learning with little ones. She has lots of great ideas! And she’ll lead us through the song using gestures – an excellent way to introduce a song to children. “I Like You” is a fun children’s song that explores activities that children enjoy.

Try these ideas in the classroom or at home!

  • Sing this song with your students to help encourage and strengthen their friendships. They can bond over the fun activities sung about in the song!
  • After you sing the song, talk about the different activities that are listed in the song. Do your students like to do those things too? What are some other things they like to do? Go around the circle and have everyone share something they like to do, either an activity from the song, or something new! Encourage them to use the vocabulary, “I like to” to start their sentences.
  • You can also go around the circle and have students share things that they like about each other!
  • Depending on what your students say they like to do, you can try other activities based on their answers. Maybe your students like to play games! Try playing a game of charades using the gestures from this song. Or maybe they like to draw and you can have them draw pictures of the things they like to do best.
  • For a fun memory challenge try playing this circle time game: have your students sit in a circle and pick one student to start the game. That student starts by saying something they like to do, for example they can say “I like to sing songs”. The student next to them has to say what the first student said and add on something they like to do. For example, “I like to sing songs and I like to ride my bike.” Then the next student would say “I like to sing songs and I like to ride my bike and I like to eat ice cream” Keep going around the circle adding new items until it becomes too long to remember. If students are struggling, the other students can give them hints or remind them what they said.
