How To Teach Super Simple Songs

How To Teach Line Up!

Caitie is sharing tips for using the preschool song “Line Up!” in the classroom and at home for lots of fun learning with little ones. She has lots of great ideas! And she’ll lead us through the song using gestures – an excellent way to introduce a song to children. “Line Up!” is a fun, active song that gets students into a line in a super fun way – it’s great for classroom management.

Try these ideas in the classroom or at home!

  • This is a wonderful song for classroom management. You can use it as a transition to get your students into a line in a simple and fun way.
If you are leading your students to another spot in the school, you can sing part of the song as you move, reminding them to move slowly with their hands by their side. Every now and then students may need a gentle reminder: quiet, please.
  • If your students are just learning what a line is, start by arranging some items into a line, like toys or stuffed animals. This is a line. Have your students arrange a few of their own items into a line as well. Then it will be their turn to get into a line. Now when they hear the phrase, ‘line up!’ they will know what to do.
  • This is also a great movement song. You can use it to help burn some energy if your students need a little active break. Choose one student to be the leader and have them lead the line in a circle, or around the room.
  • For more active movement, once you have sung this song and everyone is standing in a line, try picking a student to be the leader and have them lead everyone around the room in different ways. You can jump or skip! The leader can decide. Let other students who would like a chance to lead have a turn too!
