Want the perfect surprise to show Mom you care? Look no further! This Super Simple DIY craft is the cutest way to say “I love you” this Mother’s Day. When Mom opens this gift, she’ll know you don’t just love her a little… she’ll know you love her “a latte!” Here’s what you need to make these Mother’s Day dreams come true…
Things You’ll Need
- Photo you want to use
- Disposable paper coffee cup & lid
- Construction paper
- Paper straw
- Pencil
- Fun shape scissors (for decorating)
- Glue stick
- Glue gun
- Scissors
Steps
Cut out a heart from construction paper – make sure the heart is small enough to fit inside your cup and big enough to fit your photo. TIP: To make a perfectly symmetrical heart, fold your paper in half and draw a half heart shape. Cut it out and unfold to reveal a perfect heart!
Then cut out the part of the photo you want to use and glue it onto your construction paper heart. You can make it extra fancy by gluing your heart onto an additional color of construction paper and cutting out another heart, like we did above.
Here’s another pretty option – try cutting out a flower shape from a cupcake liner! TIP: To make a perfect flower shape, fold a cupcake line (or use construction paper cut into a circle shape) and fold it in half three times. Cut a curved line at the top making a petal shape, then unfold to reveal a perfect flower cut out! Glue your photo into the middle.
Now it’s time to write your message for Mom! We glued on additional hearts with the words “I love you a latte” on it. Moms like puns, right?
Decorate the outside of the cup with markers and stickers, anything you like!
Next, use a pencil to carefully punch a hole into the bottom of the coffee cup. Make sure the hole is off-centered, close to the back edge of the cup, as shown here. Placing the hole near the back of the cup ensures there will be plenty of space inside the cup for the photo and message.
With a glue gun, carefully glue a paper straw to the underside of the lid on the same back side of the cup. We’re matching the straw placement with the hole we made in the bottom of the cup.
Line up your message/photo under the lid and glue it onto the straw. You can gently curl the edges of the paper so they slip easily into the cup.
Place the straw through the hole and push down lightly on the lid until it looks like the lid is on the cup.
Now your gift is ready for Mom to open! At first she might be fooled thinking it’s a cup of coffee. Then…
Surprise! Once she lifts the lid and pushes up the straw, she’ll see the message of love you made just for her, “I love you a latte!”
