Can you imagine what it would be like if you could change color in order to blend in with the background? Or to match your mood? Or to match the temperature outside? Well, that’s what it’s like to be a chameleon! Chameleons fascinate little learners, so we thought it would be fun to craft some colorful chameleons to help start conversations about nature, science, habitats, reptiles, and colors!
Things you’ll need
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Bubble wrap
- Craft paint
- 6” bowl to trace
- Pencil or marker
- Paintbrush
Steps
Paint some colorful stripes down a sheet of bubble wrap, about the size of a piece of construction paper.
Lay the piece of construction paper on top of your painted bubble wrap. Press down to stamp the paint and gently peel the paper away. Cool, right? Let your paper dry.
When the paper is dry, it’s time to divide it into sections. Make a horizontal fold line in the middle first.
Measure 3“ from the left of the page and make a line with a ruler.
Chameleon! Cut along the folded line and along the line you drew. Fold the bottom section in half and cut again along the folded line.
These sections will be used for different parts of the chameleon’s body.
To make the curve of the chameleon’s body, trace half of your 6” bowl and cut out this shape.
Draw a spiral tail.
Fold these sections in half and draw the arms and legs, connecting along a folded edge.
Draw the head and an eye.
Cut out all of the parts.
Draw a spiral tail. Cut two strips from the remaining paper and fold them into ‘z’ shapes. Glue them behind the head and the eye.
Glue the head onto the body.
Place the legs on the body to mark a short line where you want them to be. Make a small cut along these lines.
Add a dab of glue and insert the legs and arms along the cut lines.
Glue the tail in place. Cut out a long pink tongue!
