This adorable yarn-wrapped photo frame makes a meaningful Mother’s Day gift, because you and mom are in the picture together! Wrapping yarn is a fun fine motor skill to practice, and the results are impressive. Pick a perfect picture and get ready to get crafty.
Things you’ll need
- Yarn
- Scissors
- Tape
- Craft knife
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Gluestick
- Printed picture
- Cereal box
- Bristol board
Steps
First, trace the shape of your photo in the centre of a piece of cardboard. Make this rectangle approximately ¼” smaller than the actual photo to ensure some overlap. Draw a border around 1-2” to make a sturdy frame. The thickness of your frame is up to you!
Grownup part: use a craft knife to cut out the frame.
Trim the corners of your frame to make a groovy octagon, or round off the corners for a smooth look. This will help the yarn from sliding off the corners when you start wrapping.
We prepared our yarn ahead of time by wrapping small bundles around two fingers. This makes it much easier to wrap wrap wrap! Tape one end of your first bundle to the back of the frame and start wrapping.
When wrapping yarn around the four corners, alternate wrapping from both sides to avoid bunching while making a decorative pattern.
When your bundle runs out, simply tie a knot to the next bundle. Ensure the knot falls at the back of the frame.
With a glue stick, glue the photo to a piece of bristol board sized a bit larger than the photo and cut it out.
Glue the picture to the back of the frame. Tape a piece of yarn for hanging.
To prop up your picture, fold and cut out a wedge of bristol board and glue it to the back of your photo frame.
