Elephants are the world’s largest land mammal. They use their amazing trunks for lots of jobs, like drinking water or showering cool mud on themselves. They also use their trunks the way we use our hands; to pick up objects and set them down. Cool!
Use your elephant sock puppet for a fun playtime activity or as an early math teaching tool. Set up some peanuts on the table and see how many the elephant can collect, counting as you drop them in a bowl. We’d love to hear your elephant sounds while playing with your new elephant sock puppet.
Things you’ll need
- Paper plates
- Construction paper, black and pink
- Markers
- Grey craft paint
- Paint brush
- Glue stick
- Scissors
- Coffee cup
- Grey adult-sized sock
- Stapler or double sided tape
- Googly eyes
Step
First, paint the underside of two paper plates with the grey craft paint. Try matching the grey paint to your chosen sock for a realistic effect. Set the paper plates aside to dry.
Once dry, place a coffee cup top-side down onto the unpainted side of one of the plates. Place it in the centre towards the bottom, and trace around it with a marker. Next, draw a circle inside your circle, leaving about ¼ inch inside the edge.
Adult part: carefully pierce the centre of the circle and cut out the smaller circle.
Next, cut one inch down from the top of your coffee cup.
Place the top of the cut coffee cup inside the sock with the rib of the cup and sock opening at the same end.
Place the sock inside the paper plate hole from the unpainted side. Push the sock nose through the paper plate until the coffee cup rim and the plate connect.
Now let’s make some elephant ears! Cut the second paper plate in half. Round the edges to make ear shapes.
Attach the ears to the paper plate face with staples or double sided tape.
Glue the eyes in place. You can also cut paper and make a crescent shaped pink mouth. Try using black paper for eyebrows and eyelashes. Cute!
