Spring Chick Craft

Spring Chick Craft

Spring has sprung, and speaking of spring, these chicks are ready to “spring” into action! We think these adorable jumping chicks are the perfect kids craft for spring. They’re fun to make on a rainy day, and even more fun to play with once assembled.

Because we love it so much, we have other versions of this craft. Check out the Jumping Frog Craft and the Hopping Bunny Craft, and if you feel extra crafty, make all three! We “hop” you like it!

Things you’ll need

Spring Chick Craft
  • 2 Paper cups
  • Pencil
  • Yellow craft paint
  • Paint brush
  • Yellow and orange construction paper
  • Googly eyes
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • 1 Rubber band
  • Jar lid, 3” wide

Steps

Spring Chick Craft

First, paint two paper cups with yellow craft paint and set them aside to dry. If you happen to have some yellow paper cups, you can skip this step.

Next, trace your jar lid three times on some yellow construction paper and cut out the circles.

Spring Chick Craft

Cut out some round feather shapes for the top of the head and glue them behind one of the circles.

Spring Chick Craft

Next, trim the sides of the circle to make some rounded feather shapes.

Spring Chick Craft

To make the wings, fold the second circle in half. Draw the wing shape on one half of the folded circle.

Spring Chick Craft

Cut out both layers at the same time.

Spring Chick Craft

Use the last circle to make the tail feathers. First, draw some rounded feathers on the top half of the circle. Draw a line halfway up to the centre of the circle.

Spring Chick Craft

Cut out the feathers and cut along the line. Fold one side of the circle over and secure it with glue to make a cone shape.

Spring Chick Craft

Cut two flaps on either side of your cup. Put your elastic around one of the flaps and secure the flap in place with a stapler. Twist the elastic band to make an X, and attach it to the other flap.

Spring Chick Craft

Secure it in place with a stapler, too. The elastic band should be fairly tight. If it is too big, try tying a knot on one side of the elastic band to make it smaller.

Spring Chick Craft

Glue the head, wings, and tail feathers onto the other cup.

Spring Chick Craft

To make a beak, fold a small piece of orange construction paper in half and cut out a triangular shape. To make some feet, layer two pieces of orange construction paper together and draw one foot. Cut out both at the same time. Glue on your googly eyes and other details.

Spring Chick Craft

Place your chick on top of the other cup, press down, and release! The chick will fly through the air. What fun!
